Free IBEW Aptitude Practice Test: Algebra and Reading

Practice for the electrical apprenticeship aptitude test in the format the electrical training ALLIANCE publishes: algebra and reading, timed, with no calculator. It is free, requires no sign-up, and every question includes a worked answer.

These are original practice questions, not questions from the actual test. Electrician Authority is an independent resource and is not affiliated with the IBEW, NECA, or the electrical training ALLIANCE.

How the practice test works

  • Full test: 33 algebra and functions questions in 46 minutes, a break, then 36 reading comprehension questions in 51 minutes.
  • One section at a time: take algebra or reading on its own, timed or untimed.
  • Move around freely within a section and change answers until you finish it or the time runs out.
  • Results show a raw score for each section and a worked answer for every question. Reading answers quote the sentence in the passage that proves them.

About the questions

The algebra questions cover the topics the ALLIANCE lists in its sample questions: evaluating formulas, solving and rearranging equations, equivalent expressions, number patterns, functions, inequalities, and everyday word problems. If the math feels rusty, our article on how much math electricians need explains why apprenticeships ask for algebra.

The reading section has six passages of about 400 words each, half about the trade and half on general topics, because the real test is not limited to electrical subjects. Two passages are fictional workplace documents with invented names, and they are labeled that way. Every factual passage was checked against a primary source, and every answer was checked by computation or against the passage itself, then solved by an independent reviewer who did not see the answer key.

What your score means

The practice test shows how many questions you answered correctly. It does not convert that to a 1–9 score, because there is no official way to do so, and each local program sets its own qualifying score. For the format, retake rules, and what happens after the test, read our guide to the IBEW aptitude test.
