If you or your student is in high school (public, private, or homeschool) and eyeing this career, you don’t have to wait until graduation to start.

Here is your roadmap to building a solid foundation for a promising career as an electrician while you’re still in your teens.

1. The Core Curriculum: What to Take (and Why)

While your guidance counselor might steer you toward a generic college-prep track, you can structure your schedule to gain a massive advantage in the electrician trade.

Math: The “Trig” Trick

You don’t necessarily need Calculus, but you do need solid Algebra and Geometry.

  • Why? Electricians use Ohm’s Law and trigonometry daily to bend conduit pipes at precise angles and calculate circuit loads.
  • The Pro Move: If your school offers “Technical Math” or “Consumer Math,” take it. These courses often focus on real-world applications like interest rates, material estimation, and measurement—skills you’ll use when billing clients or estimating jobs.

Science: Physics & Chemistry

  • Physics is non-negotiable. It teaches you how electricity actually works (currents, resistance, voltage).
  • Chemistry is the hidden gem. With the rise of lithium-ion batteries in EVs and solar storage, understanding how different metals interact (galvanic corrosion) and how batteries store energy is a future-proof skill.

English: Business Communication

  • Why? You won’t just be working with wires; you’ll be working with people. You need to write clear incident reports and emails to clients.
  • The Pro Move: Look for classes in Technical Writing or Speech/Debate. Being able to explain why a customer’s panel needs upgrading—without confusing them—is a skill that leads to management roles.

Shop & Tech: Beyond Woodshop

  • Automotive Class: Cars are basically rolling computers now. Learning to read a DC wiring diagram for a car is excellent practice for low-voltage electrical work. Plus, there’s always the option to become an automotive electrician.
  • Computer Science: Learning logic gates (AND, OR, NOT) in coding classes is directly applicable to PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) work, which is high-paying industrial automation.

2. “Outside-the-Box” Opportunities for Students

If you want to be the candidate that makes an apprenticeship board say “Wow,” look beyond the classroom.

Get Special Certifications Early

You don’t need a license to get some credentials.

  • Solar Technology Certification: The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners offers an Associate Credential designed for students. Passing this proves you understand the basics of solar energy before you ever step on a job site.
  • Commitment to Workplace Safety: The OSHA 10-hour Outreach Training Program is the gold standard for safety. Many online providers allow you to take this course for under $100. Walking into an interview with your OSHA card already in your wallet shows you are serious about safety and gives the employer confidence in your commitment to your work.

Join the “Makers”

  • Maker Spaces: Local libraries and community centers often have “Maker Spaces.” Get certified on a laser cutter or 3D printer. Building custom enclosures for electronics projects shows manual dexterity and design thinking. Makerspace.com has a massive, worldwide directory of tons of groups you could join.
  • Repair Cafés: Look for Repair Café events in your town. These are community gatherings where volunteers fix broken household items (toasters, lamps, etc.). It’s an unbeatable hands-on troubleshooting experience.

Competitions

  • SkillsUSA: If your school has a chapter, join it. This organization helps prepare kids (and adults) for the working world, both with job skills and people skills. They also have specific competitions for Industrial Motor Control and Residential Wiring.
  • FIRST Robotics: Join the “wiring team” of a robotics club. You will learn to strip wires, crimp connectors, and cable manage under high-pressure time limits.

You don’t have to invent a curriculum. Accredited programs allow you to integrate trade prep into your diploma.

Youth Apprenticeships

Some states and companies offer “Youth Apprenticeship” programs that bridge the gap between high school and a full Registered Apprenticeship.

  • Example: Gregory Electric in South Carolina has a program where high schoolers work part-time, earning money and high school credit simultaneously.
  • Action Item: Search for “School-to-Registered-Apprenticeship” (STRA) or “Youth Apprenticeship” programs in your state.

Dual Enrollment

Contact your local Community College. Instead of taking generic “High School Physics,” ask if you can dual-enroll in classes like “DC Circuit Fundamentals” or “Intro to Blueprint Reading.” You’ll graduate high school with college credits that actually count toward your license.
